What is Cold Water Immersion?

Cold water immersion is a type of cold therapy used to treat injuries, aid in exercise recovery, and promote physical and mental health. As a practice, it includes everything from swimming in a frozen lake, to sitting in a feed trough filled with ice and water, to taking a dip in a purpose-built cold plunge spa. Whatever the method, the process involves immersing yourself up to the neck in very cold water – between 4º-15ºC (39º-59ºF) – for short periods of time (1-5 minutes).

Recent evidence shows that cold water therapy can reduce swelling and inflammation, boost circulation, and improve recovery times after periods of intense exercise. Advocates also report that their cold plunge practice has helped them to combat depression, addiction and anxiety, and contributed to their overall mental well-being.
